Frequently Asked Questions ProFi solution

Q1: Why should I get ProFi APs?

A1: ProFi is a solution allowing you to effortlessly manage 100+ APs in the same way you manage an individual AP. They offer enterprise quality hardware performance in a variety of elegantly designed form factors for a wide range of applications in any professional environment.

Pair with a ProFi Cloud Gateway for a full-featured ProFi Network including enhanced network security and traffic analytics, built-in remote access.

Q2: How do I set up and configure my AP?

A2:

1. Make sure ProFi is set up and running.
2. Turn on your ProFi AP and make sure it has connectivity to your ProFi
3. Open your ProFi Mobile App (iOS / Android) or navigate to your ProFi .
4. Click/tap to adopt when your device pops up.

*APs are powered on when connected to a ProFi PoE Switch or AC power supply using a PoE Adapter.
**A ProFi Cloud Gateway is recommended for the most seamless setup experience.

Q3: Which AP is right for me?

A3: We have a versatile lineup of APs for use anywhere.

  • Pro-6-xx: High-performance ceiling-mounted access points.
  • Wall: Sleek APs that plug directly into a wall outlet for meshed connectivity*, or transform an Ethernet drop into an AP.
  • Outdoor: Versatile, weatherproof APs that can be mounted to poles outside, or conveniently placed on a surface indoors.
  • Ceiling: Great for offices or SMB with a very high density of connected devices.

*Wireless meshing requires a ProFi online.

Q4: How many APs do I need?

A4: Most ProFi APs are capable of covering 95-185 m2. Given that walls and other obstacles may degrade signal, we generally recommend having at least one AP per 95 m2 to maximize performance and connectivity.

Use our free ProFi App to upload floor plans, place ProFi devices, and confirm WiFi coverage information and cabling requirements.

Once deployed, WiFi Analyzer Mobile App (iOS/Android) is an useful utility for optimizing your ProFi WiFi. It features speed testing, latency measurements, and real world signal mapping of your floor plan.

Q5: How do I power my APs?

A5: Most APs require Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) which can be provided with a ProFi PoE Switch or a IP-COM/Tenda PoE Adapter. Make sure to check the device’s store page when determining which PoE Mode is required.

Q6: Can I wirelessly mesh my APs together?

A6: Yes, all ProFi APs automatically form a mesh network, broadcasting the same WiFi so you can maintain connectivity while roaming between your access points.

Our APs also support wireless meshing to one another so you can eliminate dead zones without the need to run additional cabling. Simply plug your AP into a ProFi PoE Adapter connected to an AC power outlet within range of a nearby access point to enable setup.

Note that meshing is not available for Standalone Access Points (without ProFi).

Q7: Are there any fees or licensing requirements?

A7: Absolutely not. Our goal is to provide you a feature-rich environment without any hidden fees.

Q8: How can I optimize my wireless speeds?

A8: ProFi APs are configured to balance speed and interference protection. To prioritize speed, simply increase the channel width used by your AP. For example, our 5 GHz radios default to using a 40 MHz channel width, but they can be manually configured to use 80 MHz, or even 160 MHz within ProFi Network’s settings.

We recommend using the WiFi Analyzer Mobile App (iOS/Android), or ProFi Network’s Radio Manager, to confirm interference levels prior to increasing channel widths.

Q9: Why is the access point not detected automatically by the ProFi controller?

A9:

  • Make sure the controller and access point are on the same network. To do this, you can use one of the “MAC scanner” programs
  • If the access point is not in the controller subnet, find it on the default IP 192.168.0.254, update the software and set to receive IP using DHCP
  • Make sure the access point has software installed that supports controller management

Q10: Why does my device say “Managed by Other”?

A10: This will occur if the device was managed by another instance of a ProFi application. This includes cases where the ProFi Console (e.g., Dream Machine Pro, or Cloud Key) was factory restored, because the ProFi device still considers itself as being managed by the 'old' application console, prior to restoration.

There are several options to resolve this:

Restore the ProFi Console from a backup in which the device was already managed.

Factory restore the ProFi device and then re-adopt it.

Reassign the device using the ProFi Network mobile app.
Note: This can only be done by the account owner and requires them to have previously signed into the mobile app while the device was managed.

Note: If you are self-hosting the Network application, you should only ever download the ProFi software on a single machine which will act as the ProFi Network Server. Some users mistakenly download this multiple times because they believe it is a requirement to manage their Network Application from other devices, but this is actually creating a completely new instance. To manage your network from another device, you can type in the IP address of the ProFi Network Server while connected to the same local network. Alternatively, you can enable Remote Access to manage your network anywhere. See Connecting to ProFi to learn more.

Q11: Why is my ProFi Device not factory restoring?

A11: Ensure that your device remains powered on during the restoration process, otherwise it will not occur.

It is also possible that you held the button for too short of a time (resulting in a reboot), or too long of a time (resulting in entering TFTP Recovery Mode). Refer to our ProFi Device LED Status guide for more information.
